The Benefits of Hiring a Freelancer – talent, taxes & time

The Benefits of Hiring a Freelancer – talent, taxes & time

Some of the most senior talents are freelance. And it is becoming increasingly common for new graduates to seek freelance roles over traditional employment. 52% of Gen Z work in freelance roles compared to 44% of Millennials. (Upwork, 2024)

For many businesses, hiring freelancers is critical to their operation. For others, it's an unnecessary risk, and an expensive one at that. But the reality is that hiring freelancers, especially in technical, time-critical operations, pays for itself.

Is hiring freelancers more expensive than permanent employment?

No. Although the hourly rate is often considerably higher, businesses save on payroll taxes, benefits, pensions and insurance.

These factors are also secondary to the value many freelancers can bring from day one. At Amoria Bond, we work with experienced freelancers who have been there and done it. That experience brings confidence, in turn allowing them to make decisions quickly and grasp complicated challenges faster than many employees.

Freelancers in STEM are often further into their careers, leaving traditional employment after decades of work at the sharp end of household names. They enter freelance work with specialised skills and expertise otherwise difficult to come by.

Can a freelancer leave whenever they want?

No. Freelancers are still tied to the contract you sign with them. Whatever the notice period is, they have a legal obligation to respect it.

The laws dictating freelance work vary depending on the country you operate in, so it is always worth checking before entering into a contract. However, freelancers are largely held to similar legal standards as any employee.

Hiring freelancers does, however, present you with greater freedoms in terms of contract length and cost-cutting. It's one reason why so many project-based businesses rely so heavily on experienced freelancers.

Are freelancers better than employees?

Often, freelancers are more specialised, especially in STEM, where most freelancers are senior professionals with decades under their belt.

Although there isn't a direct correlation between skills and freelancing, the norms in certain sectors mean freelancers often come with more experience and niche specialisations. Take AI adoption as an example: 39% of full-time employees report high AI proficiency, compared with 53% of freelancers. (Upwork, 2025)

At Amoria Bond we work closely with a wide range of freelancers and have seen their excellence up close. Not only are they specialists and often experienced, but they are also focused on outcomes and delivery. This focus regularly sets them apart on time- and capital-critical projects.

If you're looking for a STEM specialist to keep your project on time and on budget, schedule a call with us today.
